Power Pieces, for the Young and Restless Categories: lifestyle & shopping, women's fashion
The 80’s, era of decadence, social climbing and the Working Girl, when women were no longer trophy wives but heads of state. It was the decade of power, between those who had it, and those who were trying so desperately, to get it. It also heralded the age of designer, when who you wore, became just as important as who you were, and which Ivy League you graduated cum- laude from.
So, who are these new women that have taken their place and what are they wearing to the office, these days? She’s perhaps, wearing a utilitarian blouse with men’s dress pants, and she’s no longer intriguied by the 7th Avenue giants, but instead craves something more adventurous. Enter, Young & Restless and their career woman inspired Fall-Winter collection. I love their youthful take on minimalism that they seem to consistently show season after season. Although, they’re still the new kids on the block, their design aesthetic is very old world. It’s easy to see elements of French sensibility, with traditional Asian tailoring in their clothing, creating a seamless cultural marriage.
The theme for their Fall 2011 collection is “Girl Power”, and the brand’s designer, Ashburn Eng was inspired by the androgyny of the modern women, a theme so on trend with fashion’s, current, 90’s revival (see Dolce & Gabbana F/W 2011) So indeed, our working girl has graduated, she’s now looking for pieces that remind her male peers, that although her stock portfolio may be just as big, she’s still the girl next door.
